TUH Publishes 20204 Annual Report Highlighting Progress, Innovation & Resilience

Summary of Activity(September 10th 2025) Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) has today published its 2024 Annual Report, showcasing a year of exceptional activity, innovation and continued commitment to delivering high quality patient care. The report highlights the Hospital’s strategic focus on expanding capacity, embracing digital transformation and strengthening community engagement.

Professor Anne-Marie Brady, Chair of the Board, praised the dedication of staff and the Hospital’s forward-looking approach, “This past year has been marked by continued progress, resilience, and a shared commitment to delivering excellence in patient care, even in the face of sustained and growing demands. From innovations in digital health and clinical care to meaningful strides in sustainability and workforce wellbeing, our teams are working together to build a future that is both responsive and ambitious.”

The report highlights several key milestones from 2024, including:

Record Activity Levels

  • Outpatient attendances rose to 288,233
  • Emergency Department visits increased by 8%
  • Presentations from patients aged over 75 surged by 16%

Improvements in Urgent Care

  • 20% reduction in average number of patients on trolleys at 8am
  • 25% improvement in patient transfer times from ED to inpatient beds
  • 37% improvement for patients aged over 75
  • Enhanced performance across key ED metrics including time to treatment and PET compliance

 Strategic Innovation

  • Launch of TUH’s five-year Research & Innovation Strategy
  • Development of pioneering projects such as GaitKeeper and Smart CP
  • Strengthened partnerships with academic, industry and community organisations

 Community Engagement

  • Publication of the Health Assets & Needs Assessment Report, offering vital insights into the health needs of the Tallaght area and guiding future service planning

Interim CEO John Kelly, who assumed the role following the departure of Ms. Lucy Nugent in December 2024, acknowledged the Hospital’s achievements and ongoing challenges:

“2024 marked the highest level of activity since the Hospital opened its doors. Our teams continued to adapt, innovate, and respond to the growing healthcare needs of our patients. While progress has been made, we know that patient access remains a critical area for development. Our strategy remains focused on expanding capacity, modernising infrastructure, and embracing digital health transformation.”

As TUH looks ahead to 2025, the Hospital remains committed to fostering a culture of excellence, inclusion and continuous improvement and will publish a new five year strategy in the coming weeks. The new strategy will outline how the Hospital plans to future proof care that is caring, connected and resilient.
