Education & Experience

Professor Vincent Maher is a Consultant Cardiologist at Tallaght University Hospital. He is a Clinical Full Professor at Trinity College Dublin and Director of Chronic Cardiovascular Disease, Heart Failure and Cardiac Rehabilitation at TUH.  He formally trained in Cardiology at the Adelaide Hospital, Dublin, Hammersmith Hospital London and the University of Washington, Seattle, USA.  

He was Medical Director of the Irish Heart Foundation and has a long term interest in reversing and preventing heart disease. He has been President and founding Director of the Irish Cardiac Society, the Irish Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation and the Irish Atherosclerosis Society and was the Chairman of the Health Promoting Hospital Network of Ireland.  He chairs the Irish Lipid Network and is the Irish representative on the European Atherosclerosis Society. He co-founded the Heart Watch program and developed both the Irish Heart Foundation, Physical Activity & Nutrition guidelines.  He was the cardiology advisor to the FAI for over 20 years. He has been keenly involved in research, publishing extensively on the effects of exercise, lipids and obesity on cardiovascular change. 

Professor Maher has a long-term interest in education and was presented with the 2025 Deans Award in Trinity for outstanding contribution to teaching in professional practice.

Achievements

Developed the Heart Efficiency Service at TUH
Expanded the Cardiac Rehabilitation Service to be largest in Ireland
Established first hospital based peripheral artery disease rehabilitation service
Developed first dedicated cardiovascular disease prevention clinic nationally
Established first lipid management service in TUH
Received the 2025 Deans Award in Trinity College Dublin for outstanding contribution to teaching in professional practice.
