Professional Development for ArtistsThe National Centre developed an accredited postgraduate certificate in arts in healthcare settings with Maynooth University. This is the first such accredited course in Arts and Health in Ireland and started for the first time in February 2011. Currently, the Centre and Maynooth are providing a series of professional development masterclasses to provide students with an understanding of the key theories that inform teaching and learning in adulthood; to provide them with the knowledge and skills to work creatively with groups; to give them the capacity to critically reflect on their practice in the field of arts and health and to give them an understanding of what ‘arts and health’ is and the role of the arts in healthcare, both theoretical and practical. Medical HumanitiesThe Centre actively contributes to the Medical Humanities course at Trinity College Dublin School of Medicine. A new module on Arts and Health was delivered in early 2011 for undergraduate first year medical students and is delivered annually. This course is led by Prof. O’Neill and is a new medical humanities component on the undergraduate medical degree course. Mask making workshop for medical students exploring mental illness. It helps me out a bit”.Here are some quotes from our participants “It lets you express yourself. You’ve something to say to people and you can’t get it out. You come in and get it out in the colours. You express yourself non -verbally. You can tell a lot about a person and they way they’re feeling from what they’re painting and what they’re interested in.” Past Exhibitions

"Colourful Perspectives of Hospital Life"
This is an exhibition of art work by people who have experienced hospital life either from a patient's view or/and an artist's view. Exhibition run from April 2012 - September 2012. The exhibition is along the Hospital Main Corridor. About the artists click here Hugh McCarthy----------"An exhibition of paintings"Along Hospital St,AMNCH Tallaght, From 5th November to 4th February 2012 Hugh McCarty a Dublin born artist, has exhibited extensively over the past ten years in Ireland, Uk and Spain, and is the recipient of numerous awards with solo exhibitions in the Stone Gallery, Monster Truck Gallery, Hillsboro Fine Art, Jonathon Swift gallery Dublin. Hugh is currently working and living in Tallaght. Hugh McCarthy’s new paintings and works on paper contain amorphous masses and geometric areas of colour that invade and leave the picture plane. These abstract compositions reference product labels, 80´s computer games, and advertisements amongst a plethora of motifs culled from the history of art, both past and present. With this booty of painted and computer-printed quotations McCarthy creates types of hybrid landscapes or tweaked dreamlands.
These New paintings engage a notion of “Organized Living” and comments on XXX commercialization and its dialogue with the surrounding wilderness. Yet there is a harmony to be found in this play of opposing parts as they fuse together to communicate McCarthy's aesthetic interests. This unique style moves from landscape to abstraction with energetic colour, fanciful doodles and sophisticated line drawings and by juxtaposing disparate elements, such as biomorphic and mechanical forms, masculine and feminine elements; he establishes a sense of tension throughout. These new works contain a complex array of signs, symbols, colours, and shapes, a celebration of freedom - aesthetic, commercial, formal or otherwise. His paintings represent not only the sleek image of contemporary life but also the very spirit of post-modern capitalism. Bright and artificial, the convergence is both a retailer's utopian vision and, to the critic of consumer culture, a dystopian nightmare. Hugh’s vision is celebratory and appalling in equal measure.

Jackie Askew Jackie Askew is based in Liscannor, Co. Clare and has exhibited regularly over the past twenty years, with solo exhibitions at The Mermaid Arts Centre, Dunamaise Arts Centre, The Riverbank Arts Centre and County Hall, Kilkenny. She has also been selected for a number of group exhibitions in Ireland and England. She recently won the Millcove Gallery Award and has been selected to participate in a residency in Iceland later this year. As well as private collections, her work is in the collection of Limerick City Council and Meath County Council. Jackie Askew's recent work is a return to colour and abstraction. These small-scale oil paintings, through their layers, texture and linear elements, reference the artist's immediate environment of the beach and the objects found on it. Worn plastic, rope, pieces of half buried clothing are all visual influences. These elements are echoed through the process of painting with rope-like linear structures that are interwoven through layers of colour. She paints from a gut level " it is a physical reaching past what I have known, into unfamiliar ground. New depths of engagement with the bodily movement of painting translates into a more intuitive way of being in my body in the world. This then gives rise to unfamiliar linear structures that seem to be moving through time and space. Through the act of painting there is as much taking away as there is putting down, so that in the end there is no mark left that is not meant to be. It is a process of unravelling of fresh experience in the present moment. A balance of patient excavation with the urgency of mark making". Ageing and memory represent two extraordinarily important themes in contemporary society. A defining characteristic of ageing is complexity and increased inter-individual variability. This provides a rich field for study and reflection, and by its very complexity lends itself to interdisciplinary study and research. VOLUNTEERING IN THE HOSPITAL ARTS
The National Centre for Arts and Health at Tallaght University Hospital is always seeking volunteer artists to participate in the exciting art project for patients in the Hospital. The project involves volunteer artists spending 1 – 2 hours per week with patients on selected wards. Visual artists use a ‘Mobile Art Trolley’ stocked with art materials and we welcome artists from all art forms, especially visual art, music and creative writing. Artists invite patients to express themselves using the art materials by their bedside and support and encourage patients to engage in arts. Patients are offered the opportunity to create, but a refusal to engage will always be respected. Volunteer artists are supported by the Director of Arts and Health. The Clinical areas in which the artist would be offered work include Age Related Health Care, Renal Dialysis and Neurology (all adult patients) and with children in the National Children’s Hospital (N.B. subject to Garda clearance and suitable references)

Arts & Health – a little history
Over the last decade, the Arts Programme at TUH has evolved to provide not only a substantial arts and health programme but also national leadership in academic and practical development of this important aspect of health. The programme has received constant support from the Volunteer Coffee Shop Fund, as a programme which accesses all areas and all specialties within the hospital. In addition, the three hospital foundations (the Adelaide Health Foundation, the Meath Foundation and the National Children’s Hospital Foundation) have been very supportive of a wide range of arts and health projects.
The programme, now encompassed as the National Centre for Arts and Health, has engaged in collaboration with major cultural institutions in the State, including the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the National Gallery of Ireland, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Irish Film Institute and various artist and ensembles. Previously, for example, we had an Arts Council funded composer-in-residence in the Stroke Service, Ian Wilson.
Novel programmes have generated a volume of poetry by the patients, exhibitions at local galleries of art by patients – including the ARThritis programme and exhibitions, including one at the local community gallery, Rua Red. Of particular importance has been the development of an academic track, with the first papers on arts and health from any Irish hospital published in the biomedical literature, as well as the development of a course to train artists to work in a healthcare environment. NUI Maynooth are now delivering the first accredited post graduate certificate in Arts and Health in partnership with the National Centre for Arts and Health.
Mission Statement
Arts & Health at TUH exists to improve patient care and to promote the benefits of the arts in health. The centre aims to improve the hospital experience for patients, to explore the therapeutic potential of the arts, to build positive links with the local community and to make the arts accessible to patients who cannot access traditional arts venues. The Arts Office is situated on the ground floor in the Centre for Learning & Development at TUH.
All art programmes are tailored to the needs of individual patients and clinical departments. The Hospital arts programme features a number of national innovations and strives to promote best practice in arts and health, through professional development, evaluation and research. The centre also offers consultation and advice to services establishing arts and health programmes and regularly gives presentations on its work, within both medical and arts settings.
