Description of Maple Ward - Children's
Maple Ward has 21 cubicles, including five parent and child rooms. Children aged 0-1 year requiring management of medical and surgical conditions are generally admitted to Maple Ward. However, children or young people older than one year may also be admitted to Maple Ward if their condition requires him/her to be nursed in a single room.We encourage parents/guardians to stay with their child while in hospital and their involvement as much as possible to help minimise their child's anxiety.
Parents/Guardians have no restrictions with regard to visiting their child however a maximum of two other visitors per patient are allowed on the ward. Visitors should be over 18 years or accompanied by someone who is. Visiting restrictions may apply in some circumstances, nursing staff will advise you if these are in place. It such restrictions are in place they are there in the best interest of the child or parent, for confidentiality reasons we may not be able to explain the exact purpose of these restrictions so we ask for your support and understanding.
Parents accommodation is available for those who wish to say overnight, this is located near the ward area. (Children are not allowed in this area). If you do not wish to avail of this or wish to stay at your child's bedside every effort will be made to provide a camp bed for you. Camp beds must be folded away during the day to allow for easy access and cleaning. Bathroom and shower facilities are available for resident parents.
A parents tea room is available near the ward however for Health and Safety reasons children are not allowed in her at any time. Hot drinks are not allowed on the ward for the same reason.
The telephone in your room is for incoming calls only. The direct line number for incoming calls to your room is 414 and your extension number. Public phones are available on the ground floor.
Please ensure that the cot sides are up at all times when your child is in the cot and that you know how to secure them properly.
If you are leaving your child unattended please inform the nursing staff. All milk formula are available on the ward. They are made up on a daily basis in our formula room. Every effort is will be made to assist breastfeeding mothers. A breast feeding pump is available to any mum who wishes to use it.
Please bring in nappies for your child for the duration of the child's admission.
Please inform staff on admission if your child has any special dietary requirements.
