The Department of Intensive Care Medicine at TUH are responsible for providing Intensive Care/Critical Care services at TUH. Led by Intensive Care Medicine Consultants Dr. Maria Donnelly, Dr. Arabella Fahey and Prof. Gerry Fitzpatrick the ICU team provide a comprehensive 24/7 service to patients in the Intensive Care Unit, Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and the high dependency beds in Coronary Care Unit. In addition to the medical and specialist nursing staff the ICU team includes specialist pharmacists, nutritionist and physiotherapists.
The Department are approved by the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland and the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of Ireland for postgraduate training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM). We also provide undergraduate teaching in ICM to students of TCD Medical School and postgraduate nurse education in Intensive Care.
Our research programme includes participation in national and international multicentre studies conducted by both the Irish Critical Care Trials Group and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. Other research interests include severe acute pancreatitis, the study of drug clearance in critical illness and long term outcomes in ICU patients requiring dialysis.
