Description of Department/Service

The Radiology Department in Tallaght University Hospital provides a comprehensive adult and paediatric inpatient and outpatient diagnostic imaging service to local and regional patients. This includes imaging modalities such as General Radiology, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Nuclear Medicine - diagnostic, and fluoroscopy. The Department also provides a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic Interventional Radiology Service. In addition to this the department supports services to the Emergency Department, Theatre & Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Catherisation Laboratory, Speech Therapy and Endoscopy.

The service is provided by a multidisciplinary team of Radiologists, Radiographers, Nursing staff, Physicists, Clerical Staff and Porters. This team works collectively to provide quality patient healthcare with an excess of 160,000 examinations carried out each year.

As part of the educational opportunities that make Tallaght a teaching Hospital, the department has close links with Trinity College, University College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons to facilitate clinical placements in Radiology & Radiography. The department also has a strong research tradition, and is currently involved in many clinical trials and research projects.

The department uses an information technology system called NIMIS. This system links the department to Hospitals across the country, allowing clinicians to share patient’s images to enhance patient care.

Patient Information

Out-Patients can access the diagnostic services through either a referral from their General Practitioner (GP) for General X-Ray or Ultrasound. All other services require Consultant referral.

If you have a referral for a Chest X-Ray from your GP please attend between 1:30pm and 4pm, Monday to Friday to the Adult X-Ray Department in the Hospital. Please check in at reception in the X-Ray Dept when you arrive. The check-in kiosks in reception are for outpatient clinics not Radiology Services.

For ALL other GP referred x-rays (i.e. other than chest) please send your referral letter to the Radiology Department at Tallaght University Hospital and we will be in contact with you to arrange an appointment.

We will continue to provide a walk in service for query traumas/fractures between 9am - 12pm and 2pm - 4pm Monday to Friday, if the injury occurred within the past seven days. Patients must bring their GP referral letter with them.  All other referrals will be given the next available appointment.
